Accessibility

Usable by anyone who needs it, on whatever they have.

People looking for food are often on an old phone, a library computer, or using assistive technology. We treat accessibility barriers as bugs, not feedback.

Our target

WCAG 2.2 AA

Across the whole site, including the planner, the directory, the budget planner and every form.

What we've done

Built in from the start.

  • Keyboard first

Everything works with Tab, Enter, Space and arrow keys. A skip link jumps straight to the content.

  • Visible focus

The element you're on is always outlined clearly, on light and dark backgrounds.

  • Screen-reader labels

Buttons, icons and form fields have names. Results that change after you act are announced.

  • Contrast and colour

Text meets AA contrast, and colour is never the only way a status is shown.

  • Large targets

Buttons and links you tap are at least 44 pixels high, with room around them.

  • Reduced motion

If your device asks for less motion, animations switch off. Nothing makes you wait.

  • Small screens

Designed for a small phone first, with no sideways scrolling down to 320 pixels wide.

  • Plain language

Short sentences and common words. Estimates are called estimates.

Known limitations

Where we fall short today.

An honest list. If something here affects you, or you find something that isn't here, please tell us.

  1. Not yet tested with assistive-technology users

The site has been checked with automated tools and keyboard-only use, but not yet with people who rely on screen readers, magnifiers or switch access every day. That testing is part of the next phase.

  2. The demo map is visual

The map is a picture of where places are. Everything on it is also in the list beside it, with the same details, so you never need the map to make a plan.

  3. Translations are partial

French, Punjabi, Mandarin and Korean are started but incomplete, so parts of the site stay in English. Plain language is our stopgap, not a substitute.

  4. Printed plans are simplified

Printing keeps addresses, hours, what to bring and backups, but drops the map and interactive controls.

Tell us what got in the way.

If something is hard to use with your keyboard, screen reader, magnifier, switch, voice control or anything else, tell us what you were trying to do and what happened. The page address and the device or browser you use help, but they're optional.

Choose the accessibility topic on the contact form. You don't need an account.
